When I was in my early teens, my uncle gave me a copy of Knock on Any Door, a novel by Willard Motley. I started reading it and didn't stop until I read it all. It was in the summer. Years later, I learned that KOAD was required reading in sociology classes at Adelphi University in New York. I found this film on DVD and immediately ordered it. Finally, at age 76 years, I've seen the movie. There movie approaches the story differently, but tells the same story. Many details in the book did not make it into the movie, however, I think it would have slowed the momentum of the movie. My Wie and I were very impressed with the movies. The value of this movie goes beyond entertainment. If there book is read and the movie is seen, the effect on the individual will be quite profound. Excellent book. Excellent movie. Different approaches, however, the same ideas are presented and in very different styles. Both work. Quite well.
